Roland Backes

Vice President, Mergers & Acquisitions
Bayer Corporation

Roland H. Backes heads Bayer Corporation’s Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) department. He is responsible for the execution of mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and joint-ventures across all subgroups in the US. His day-to-day activities include all aspects of buy- and -sell-side M&A transactions, including the identification and financial evaluation of potential targets or divestiture candidates, coordination of due diligence, deal structuring, negotiations and coordination of internal approval processes. Furthermore, Mr. Backes assists the Bayer subgroups with post-merger integration and carve-out issues.

Mr. Backes joined Bayer in 2006 as a Senior Project Manager for Bayer AG Corporate Mergers & Acquisitions (FI-MA) in Leverkusen, Germany, where he executed and managed worldwide M&A projects throughout all Bayer subgroups.

Prior to joining Bayer, Mr. Backes worked in Deutsche Bank’s Mergers, Acquisitions and Corporate Advisory Group in New York City, where he executed 25 transactions with a cumulative volume of $93 billion, including Bayer AG’s $6.6 billion acquisition of Aventis Agrochemicals.

Mr. Backes earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Business Administration degree with concentrations in Management and Finance from Columbia Business School, graduating with Honors and Beta Gamma Sigma.

Mr. Backes has dual U.S./German citizenship and is fluent in English, German and French. He currently resides in Pittsburgh, PA.
